The massive 3/4” thick glass of the Poise coffee table’s top defies gravity, seeming to be held down only by the cables mooring it to the base.
INSPIRATION
I have always been delighted with tensegrity structures. After building this sketch I was inspired to explore this concept at larger scale. Having previously developed tensegrity furniture, I was confident I could work towards a structural design that captured the wonder of tensegrity.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
My primary design objectives were to create something structural enough to be fully functional, to preserve the magical quality in the sketch model, and to create something simple enough for manufacturability.
CONSTRUCTION
I chose the visual and physical weight of a 3/4” glass top to dramatize the interplay of gravity and tension. I chose solid steel bar for the frame for both its structural properties and for its somewhat graphic expression. I also extensively researched and customized existing wire rope hardware for the tension system, which I carefully integrated into the design.
FABRICATION
I fabricated the steel frame. Through careful planning and execution the end result exceeded my expectations with its functionality, unique expression, and unmistakable poise.
